Are Chinese going bananas? WHO says China needs mental health care

May 12’s earthquake in Sichuan province kept medical services busy in treating mainly physical injuries. After more than one and half month of that tragedy now the medical system is targeted towards treating mental wounds and providing Psychological support like treating PTSD or Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. Patients of mental health include the disabled, amputated and the others affected by the earthquake like loss of home or loss of income or belongings or loss of loved ones. Such views were expressed by WHO’s China representative who recently visited the quake affected area.

The Chinese ministry of health has asked for WHO’s support for training such psychological and rehabilitation workers.

Though the Chinese health minister Chen Zhu expressed some very positive views like creating better health network till this September there are no government estimate of people needing psychological help has been released. But state media reported that number of such people could be around 600,000.

unfortunately in this nick of the woods mental problems aren’t considered ”real” diseases and thus don’t prompt ”real” medical attention. as sad the situation is, the fact remains that we really don’t place enough emphasis on sound mental health. if a person does suffer from a psychological ailment, he’s passed off as a weakling and if the symptoms are violent, then a ”gone case”. the public shame factor also keeps a lot of people from seeking help and the lack of professionals to help cure these diseases also doesnt help a lot.

The social stigma attached to mental illness is profound. People don’t seek help and in many cases, friends and family urge not to seek help because of the prejudices against mental health professionals. Unfortunately, sometimes mental health practitioners are themselves biased against their patients

This is the tough part in disaster response management. This is also what takes the longest to implement.
