According to Canadian researchers people who had surgery for getting rid of morbid obesity had a much lower risk of cancer then the obese ones who did not go through such a surgery. The difference was significant in colon and breast cancers, both of which have been linked to obesity.

The reasonable objection:
Surgeon Dr. Phillips at Cidar-Sinai medical center has some justifiable objections. According to his views in Los Angeles Times before undergoing surgery for getting rid of obesity the patients are often screened for Cancer. Though he was not involved with the research. He also adds that due to screening only patients not having cancer are selected. This could lead to some bias in the research.
This study was recently presented at the annual meeting of the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery.
